As the sponsors of the Tree Farm Program in Vermont for more than a decade, VWA has seen many positive changes, including third-party certification through Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). On the value-added side, we know that consumer demand is trending toward green-certified products and PEFC status now allows Tree Farmers to sell timber into these markets.
With a grant from State & Private Forestry to increase the supply of third-party certified wood in Vermont, we recently mailed a letter to UVA property owners inviting them to become Tree Farmers. Since many UVA management plans may already meet Tree Farm requirements, this approach captures the “low hanging fruit.” A secondary goal is to provide landowners an easier path to develop management plans that can meet the requirements of various programs such as UVA, Tree Farm, Stewardship, EQIP, SFI, and FSC should they wish to step up their management. The grant also allows us to pay inspectors a $65 stipend for UVA properties that you enroll in Tree Farm. Please be sure to check with us to see if you have inspected an eligible property.
If you are not a certified Tree Farm inspector, we urge you to take the training on March 7, 2011 at the VAST office in Berlin, VT. Download registration. If you have previously been a certified Tree Farm inspector and need to update your certification, you can now complete the update online. Visit the ATFS Inspectors' Corner for details.
